SOU visits Knights, Mounties for first time

ASHLAND
– After physical battles against Corban and Northwest Christian over the weekend, the Southern Oregon men's soccer team will look to improve on its Cascade Conference standing on the road this weekend.

SOU (4-2-1 overall, 2-1-1 CCC) will play at Warner Pacific (1-5-1, 0-3-1) at 1p.m. Friday and at Eastern Oregon (6-2-1, 1-2-1) at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The Raiders nearly stole their first-ever point from a ranked opponent last Friday against 11th-ranked Corban, but watched Paul Matyas' potential game-winner bounce off the crossbar in overtime and the Warriors won it, 2-1, on a free kick a few minutes later. The next day, they rallied back from a 2-0 second-half deficit against Northwest Christian and salvaged a 2-2 draw thanks to goals from Sean McManamon and Carlos Magana.

Briefly:
–Magana scored his fifth goal of the season against Northwest Christian on Saturday in the 84th minute. Magana and Dakota Scott lead the Raiders with five goals apiece, tied for the fifth-most in the CCC.
– During the 2015 campaign, four Raiders posted double-digit points. Seven games into this season, four players have already posted double-digit points: Magana, McManamon, Scott and Mitchell Pinney have 10 apiece.
– Prior to Saturday's game vs. Northwest Christian, Southern Oregon had never played in back-to-back overtime games or finished a game in a tie.

About Warner Pacific:
– The Knights were projected to finish 10th in the CCC coaches' poll after going 10-8-1 overall and 8-4-1 CCC last season.
– Warner Pacific traveled to Raider Stadium on Oct. 2, 2015, winning the teams' first-ever meeting 4-1.
– WPC has been shutout in three of four CCC games.
– 12 players return from the 2015 team. The Knights added 19 freshmen and four transfers during the offseason.
– The Knights are coached by Chris Thoms in his second season (11-13-2 Overall, 8-7-2 CCC).

About Eastern Oregon:
– The Mountaineers, in the second season of the program's existence, were picked to finish ninth in the CCC. They went 7-9 Overall and 5-8 in the CCC last year, tying the Raiders in ninth place.
– EOU traveled to Raider Stadium on Oct. 3, 2015, losing 1-0.
– The Mountaineers have yet to play at home. They play Oregon Tech in their home-opener on Friday.
– They've scored 23 goals, and 14 have come from three of the CCC's top scorers: Tyler Hoiem (six), Elvis Pavon (four) and Julian Wells (four).
– EOU has recorded a CCC-high 121 fouls .
– The Mountaineers are coached by Stan Rodrigues in his second season (13-11-1 Overall, 6-9-1 CCC).
