Graham sparks SOU's third consecutive shutout win

PORTLAND – The Southern Oregon women's soccer team established another program first Friday by improving to 3-0 in the Cascade Conference, making Warner Pacific its latest victim with a 2-0 victory at Damazo Field.

Redshirt-freshman reserve Facienne Graham, a product of Ashland High, provided the spark by scoring the Raiders' first goal and assisting the second in the first half. Not long after entering the game, Graham scored her first goal unassisted from 18 yards in the 40th minute, and less than three minutes later she passed from the end-line to Maddy Spangler, who deposited a shot from eight yards deep.

SOU's defense and dominance in possession took care of the rest. The Knights (3-5-1 overall, 1-3-1 CCC) are the sixth opponent the Raiders (6-3-1, 3-0) have shut out this season, and they're the first CCC opponent that has failed to put a shot on goal against SOU since Eastern Oregon on Oct. 9, 2014.

SOU's first three conference opponents have combined for seven shots on goal and have been outscored 9-0. The last time SOU had blanked three straight CCC foes was the 2011 season.

Graham's goal and assist were her second of each this season. Spangler, a sophomore from Newbury Park, Calif., got on the board for the first time this season.

The Raiders have won the last 14 games in which they've scored multiple goals. They've also won all six games against NAIA competition in 2016 by a combined score of 20-1.

Saturday's 3:30 p.m. game at Eastern Oregon figures to be the one of the Raiders' most pivotal of the CCC season. The Mountaineers went 9-2 in the CCC last year, advancing to the national tournament for the first time, and are 4-0-1 in the circuit this season after Friday's 4-0 defeat of Oregon Tech.
