Raiders on the board with 2-0 defeat of George Fox

ASHLAND – The Southern Oregon men's soccer team was in command all afternoon Wednesday against George Fox and finally got proof in the second half with goals from Paul Matyas and Carlos Magana for a 2-0 victory at Raider Stadium.

In the 54th minute of a scoreless game, Matyas took a through-pass from Mitchell Pinney that traveled about 20 yards and split the field in traffic, and struck it with his left foot. With Bruins keeper Ricardo Sotelo creeping out of his post, Matyas' shot skipped 12 yards from left of goal to the lower-right corner for his first score of the season.

Magana tacked on his first goal as a Raider in the 74th minute, lining a 15-yard shot from straight on just over Sotelo's hands and under the crossbar. Greg Rapet was credited with the assist.

The win was the first of the season for SOU (1-1 overall), which was playing an NCAA Division III opponent for the first time.

The Raiders controlled the action with a 9-3 advantage in shots in the first half, 8-2 in the second, and three corner kicks to the Bruins' zero. The Raiders put nine of their shots on goal, while SOU keeper Jonathan Morales needed only to make two saves for the shutout.

The shutout was the sixth in the two-year history of the team.

George Fox fell to 0-4.

SOU's final nonleague game is at 8 p.m. Saturday against Linfield College in Ashland. The game was originally scheduled to start at 1 p.m., but the start time was changed Wednesday due to officiating conflicts.
