Raiders triumph twice at Warner duals

PORTLAND – The ninth-ranked Southern Oregon men's wrestling team kept hope alive for a 47th consecutive winning season Saturday with two dual wins Saturday at Warner Pacific's C.C. Perry Gym.

SOU started the day by handily defeating the host Knights, 37-15, and followed up by edging Simon Fraser (B.C.), 24-18. The Raiders totaled five pins on the day, led by second-ranked Tyler Cowger's two at 149 pounds, while Casey Coulter (133) and ninth-ranked Tanner Fischer (197) picked up two wins apiece.

The Raiders improved to 6-7 in duals with three to go. The next one is their biggest obstacle – they're at sixth-ranked Menlo (Calif.) on Wednesday – but they'll first compete Sunday at the Clackamas Open in Oregon City.

Against WPC, Josh Johnson started the Knights with a pin at 125 pounds before the Raiders responded with 21 unanswered points. Coulter's 3-1 decision against Joshua Crager was followed by three economical pins in a row: Devin Poppen (141) got Calvin Call in 30 seconds, Cowger got Charles Peterson in 2:34, and Chandler Michael (157) finished Eric Luna in 37 seconds.

The Knights claimed two of the final three contests, but SOU got forfeit wins at 174 and 285 and Fischer scored a 14-5 major decision over Brandon Morgan.

Against the Clan, a six-point forfeit benefitting the Raiders proved to be the difference. A technical fall for SFU's Oscar Bulaqui at 125 put SOU in another early hole, but the Raiders took the next 15 points as Coulter edged Cruz Velasquez, 3-2, Poppen won by forfeit, and Cowger pinned Taber Spray in 1:36. Tanner Spray (157) stopped the bleeding for SFU with a decision at 157 before SOU's third-ranked Hunter Hodges avenged a loss against WPC by pinning Graham Fader in 5:53 at 165 pounds to make it 21-8.

Following consecutive decisions in favor of the Clan, Fischer clinched the victory by controlling Ciaran Ball, 9-2, in a decision that made it 24-14 heading into the final bout.

Cowger improved to 11-1 in dual action, and Hodges went to 10-2 with his sixth dual win by fall. Fischer, however, has been the hottest Raider of late, winning his last eight dual outings.
