DeSaulnier, Holmes bring SOU back to down Knights

ASHLANDTristen Holmes and Ben DeSaulnier wouldn't let Southern Oregon lose Sunday afternoon, combining for 36 second-half points on 13-of-17 shooting to bring the Raiders back from 15 points down in their 87-83 defeat of Warner Pacific at Mountain Avenue Gym.

Holmes, a sophomore point guard, was shut out in the first half but finished with 19 points, eight assists and eight rebounds. DeSaulnier, a junior wing, went 8-of-14 and totaled 24 points, six rebounds and two steals. His only 3-pointer of the day put SOU in front for good, 79-78 with 2:47 left.

The Raiders (16-8 overall, 10-4 Cascade Conference) have won six of their last seven games heading into Tuesday night's tilt at 24th-ranked Oregon Tech, which is a game ahead of them in the CCC standings.

They were down 10 at halftime and faced their biggest deficit at 58-43 after a Kaleb Tompkins 3-pointer with just over 14 minutes to play. Holmes hit two 3-pointers and Conor Carroll and Tate Hoffman hit one apiece in the ensuing 14-2 run that brought SOU back to life. The Raiders finally tied it at 62-all on another Holmes 3 from straight on with 9:49 left, but the teams went back and forth from there.

After DeSaulnier's go-ahead triple, back-to-back Jason Simmrin buckets inside sandwiched a Tompkins jumper to leave SOU up 83-80. That was the score when Holmes, at the end of the shot clock, hit a contested fall-away jumper near the baseline to put the Raiders up five with 27 seconds left.

The Knights (8-14, 4-10) were gifted one last chance. Keaton Bankofier drilled a 3 in the corner to make it 85-83, and he came up with a steal with 12 seconds to go as DeSaulnier made an errant pass against WPC's full-court pressure. Bankofier's contested shot inside missed, however, and DeSaulnier came up with the rebound. With six seconds left, DeSaulnier then caught a baseball pass from Holmes on the out-of-bounds play and laid it in.

SOU swept the regular-season series against the Knights for the second year in a row. After shooting 1-of-8 from beyond the arc in the first half, the Raiders went 7-of-12 in the second and finished at 49 percent (34-of-69) from the field.

Hoffman had 14 points and nine rebounds, and Simmrin finished with 12 points off the bench. The freshman forwards combined to make 12 of 21 attempts.

DeSaulnier also converted all seven of his attempts at the free-throw line, where he's made 43 of his last 44.

De'Corrius Sampson-Young and Bankofier scored 19 apiece to lead the Knights. Tompkins added 10 points and six boards off the bench.
