Holmes' 32 not enough as Raiders sunk early at OIT

KLAMATH FALLS – The 24th-ranked Oregon Tech Owls were too sharp for Southern Oregon in the first half and got away for a 99-85 Cascade Conference victory Tuesday night at Danny Miles Court.

SOU point guard Tristen Holmes scored a career-high 32 points on 9-of-19 shooting from the field and 12-of-15 at the line, but 26 of those came in the second half when the Raiders (16-9 overall, 10-5 CCC) were already in too deep a hole. Freshman post Jordan Hunt added a season-high 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting to help SOU get back in it.

The first half, however, belonged solely to the Owls (19-6, 12-3), who ran their home record to 14-0. They shot 22-of-41 from the field, made half of their 14 attempts from 3-point range, only committed one turnover, held the Raiders to 8-of-25 shooting and found themselves up 57-32 by the break.

Joel Yellow Owl scored 26 points on an 11-of-16 display, Brandon Halter had 18 and Tyler Heib added 15 off the bench with three of OIT's nine total 3s.

Holmes, who has averaged over 21 points in SOU's last seven games, did his best to stop the bleeding. After the Raiders trailed by as many as 31, his 3s on back-to-back possessions cut it to 83-69 with six minutes left. His try from deep on the next possession, though, fell short, and OIT opened the lead back up.

Ben DeSaulnier chipped in 12 points and four steals and Tate Hoffman had 10 points and four boards for the Raiders. Their bench, though, was outscored 38-7.

They fell to 5-2 on the road in conference play, and they'll be on the road again for Friday's 2:30 p.m. game at Walla Walla (Wash.).
