SOU surges down the stretch, completes sweep of Wolves

COLLEGE PLACE, Wash. – Southern Oregon outscored Walla Walla 40-18 over the final 13 minutes to break free for a 90-73 Cascade Conference win Friday afternoon at Windemuth Court.

Flat in the first half, when they went 11-for-34, the Raiders shot 55 percent (18-of-33) with seven 3-pointers in the second and found stability in freshman post Jordan Hunt, who scored 19 and tallied career-highs of 14 rebounds and five blocks.

Raider guard Ben DeSaulnier scored 23 points to go with four steals, point guard Tristen Holmes registered his second double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds, and Conor Carroll poured in all 10 of his points after halftime. Before SOU broke a 59-59 deadlock at the 10-minute mark with nine unanswered points – Carroll scored five of them – there had been 13 ties and seven lead changes.

The Raiders improved to 17-9 overall and 11-5 in the CCC. In fourth place, they're tied with College of Idaho in the loss column but have two more wins than the Yotes. Next Friday they'll be at 12th-ranked Eastern Oregon, and the following night they'll visit C of I.

The Wolves (3-20, 2-13), who also gave SOU a scare on Jan. 8 when they hit 15 of their first 22 attempts from downtown, this time shot 6-of-27 outside and went 4-for-16 overall in the last 10 minutes. They had their biggest lead at 55-50, but Holmes immediately cut into it with a 3-pointer that started a 9-0 SOU spurt.

Carroll, DeSaulnier, Holmes and Hunt accounted for 42 of SOU's 52 second-half points, all scoring in double figures.

It was the second encouraging outing in a row for the 6-foot-9 Hunt, who had 21 points in SOU's loss Tuesday at Oregon Tech. He made 13 of 22 shots on the week.

Dylan Browning led WWWU with 18 points and Isaiah Taylor had 14.
