McGriff, Mountaineers get away from SOU

LA GRANDE – Eastern Oregon forward Bryan McGriff put on a show in the first half and totaled 31 points to help the 16th-ranked Mountaineers pull away for a 94-83 defeat of Southern Oregon on Friday night at Quinn Coliseum.

McGriff – the Cascade Conference's leading scorer, second-leading rebounder and presumptive frontrunner for player-of-the-year honors – finished 11-of-16 but went 9-for-11 and made all four of his deep 3-point tries before halftime to put EOU (20-6 overall, 13-4 CCC) up 62-43. Four weeks earlier, in SOU's 97-94 upset in Ashland, he lit up the Raiders for 30 points.

The Mountaineers moved into a second-place tie with Oregon Tech, which went down Friday at College of Idaho. The Raiders (17-10, 11-6) visit 25th-ranked C of I in a 7:30 Mountain Time tipoff Saturday.

Ben DeSaulnier scored a team-high 21 points and pulled down six rebounds for SOU, and his 3-pointer with 11 minutes left trimmed EOU's lead to 76-67. It was a 10-point game a minute later when Tate Hoffman missed a shot at the basket, and Max McCullough knocked down a 3-pointer in transition on the other end to open the lead back up.

Jordan Hunt had 14 points and six rebounds, Tristen Holmes totaled 13 points and six assists and Jason Simmrin scored 10 off the bench on 4-of-5 shooting for the Raiders, who moved a game back of fourth-place C of I.

Kentrell Washington added 16 points and 11 boards for EOU, which finished the first half 26-for-38 from the field and 10-for-15 from downtown. In the second half, the Mountaineers missed 11 of their 12 3-point attempts.

Kenny Meyer finished with eight points, four rebounds and three assists, and Hoffman had nine points and three boards.
