SOU goes down in double-overtime at Northwest

KIRKLAND, Wash. – A Kaelan Hicks put-back with one second left gave Northwest (Wash.) a 98-96, double-overtime victory against No. 9 Southern Oregon on Friday night at NU Pavilion.

Hicks finished with 15 points and eight rebounds and Justice Martion had 24 points and 12 boards as the Eagles (8-5 overall, 2-1 Cascade Conference) capitalized on SOU's late struggles. What had been a 43-28 SOU lead with a minute left in the first half was erased by the midway point of the second, and the Raiders needed a Ben DeSaulnier transition 3-pointer with seven seconds left just to force overtime.

DeSaulnier and Tristen Holmes, SOU's all-star backcourt, combined to shoot 4-of-23 in regulation. But Holmes also came through in the clutch: With a minute left in the first overtime he hit two game-tying free throws, and with 38 seconds left he gave SOU an 88-86 lead with a driving layup. Another Northwest second-chance basket – Jasdeep Singh's tip-in – forced the second overtime.

There, a pair of DeSaulnier free throws tied it again with 20 seconds left, but Hicks had the final say after rebounding a Tanner Davis miss near the hoop.

The Raiders shot 40 percent overall – their lowest clip in 31 games spanning back to last season – but Kenny Meyer boosted them with 18 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals off the bench. Conor Carrroll shot 5-of-7 from 3-point range to score 16 points, while DeSaulnier (17 points), Holmes (13), Aaron Borich (13) and Jordan Hunt (10) joined them in double figures.

The Raiders dropped to 7-4 and 2-1 in the CCC. Their four losses have been decided by a combined 13 points.

They'll finish the trip at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Evergreen (Wash.).
