Meyer, Holmes light up #7 College of Idaho in SOU's upset win

ASHLAND – Slowed by lingering injuries in recent weeks, Southern Oregon University guard Kenny Meyer picked an opportune moment to bounce back with a career-best offensive outburst.

Meyer, a senior from Sparks, Nev., dazzled with 30 points on 9-of-12 shooting off the bench to enable the 13th-ranked Raiders' 100-93 upset of No. 7 The College of Idaho on Sunday at Mountain Avenue Gym.

Meyer – along with junior point guard Tristen Holmes, who went for 23 points and 11 assists, and senior guard Ben DeSaulnier, who scored 19 on just eight shots – shot the Yotes (7-4 overall, 1-1 Cascade Conference) out of their zone defense. The Raiders (7-3, 2-0), though, had to hold off a late charge in which C of I trimmed what had been an 18-point margin with 4:36 remaining to four points in a matter of a few minutes.

The Yotes brought a six-game winning streak into the matchup, capped by Saturday's 71-68 win at No. 22 Oregon Tech, but watched the Raiders shoot 22-of-33, including 7-of-13 from downtown, in the first half en route to a 55-36 advantage at the break.

Positioned in the middle of that zone, Meyer asserted himself early in going 5-of-6 before halftime. He finished with three 3-pointers and a 9-of-11 mark from the free-throw line. After scoring in double figures in SOU's first three games, he'd scored a combined 18 points in the previous six.

Since the start of the 2012-13 season, the Yotes have allowed 100 points or more on three occasions in conference play – each time against SOU. The Raiders have defeated C of I at home three of the last four years.

They led 92-74 to play before C of I scored 14 unanswered. Talon Pinckney's back-to-back 3-pointers made it 92-88 with 1:46 to go, and at that score the Yotes stole possession after Meyer's foot was ruled out of bounds on an inbounds play following the second triple.

To regain control, SOU forward Jordan Hunt blocked a Gibson Berryhill attempt inside and grabbed the rebounds, and Meyer hit a pair of free throws on the other end to bring the lead back to six.

Pinckney shined for the Yotes with 22 points and eight assists, and Aziz Leaks recorded his fourth straight double-double with 18 points and 11 boards. Nate Bruneel scored 15 points and Roosevelt Adams added 14 with four 3-pointers, including a couple during the comeback.

SOU finished with a 57-percent clip (34-of-60) from the field and went 11-of-23 from downtown. Hunt finished with 12 points and nine rebounds.

The offensive activity was clean on both ends: The teams combined for only 13 turnovers – only one individual had more than one – and went 37-of-45 from the free-throw line.

SOU will be off until Dec. 15 and 16, when it travels to Washington for CCC games at Northwest and Evergreen.
