Sandoval's shutout leads Raiders past William Jessup

REDDING, Calif. Gabby Sandoval threw a three-hit gem in her second collegiate start and Southern Oregon blanked William Jessup (Calif.), 4-0, Friday afternoon at Big League Dreams Park.

The Raiders (3-1 overall) were also scheduled to play sixth-ranked Simpson later in the day, but that game was called off due to rain. They'll still attempt to get in games Saturday at 9 a.m. against William Jessup and 11 a.m. against Simpson.

Sandoval, a freshman right-hander, struck out four and walked one. She retired 13 Warriors in a row after surrendering back-to-back singles in the first inning, and her shutout was complete when Natalie Basaldua to line into a double play in the seventh.

Through two starts (both wins), Sandoval has allowed one earned run in 14 innings.

The Raider lineup provided a lead before she ever entered the circle. Kelsey Randall, Kayleen Smith, Harlee Donovan and Karlee Coughlin started the game with consecutive singles. Coughlin's drove in Randall, and Smith scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Rebecca Velasquez.

Graifman only allowed three more hits the rest of the way, but SOU added two unearned runs in the sixth after loading the bases on free passes. Smith's two-out grounder was misplayed at third base, and Aaliyah Oliver and Davalin Ontiveros scored on the play.

Smith and Donovan were the only Raiders with multiple hits, and Randall also reached twice.

Graifman struck out six for the Warriors (2-1) but walked two and hit two.
