SOU in 10th place with three All-Americans after Day 1

2/10/2017 9:03:00 PM

OKLAHOMA CITY – Three Southern Oregon wrestlers will come home All-Americans from the Women's College Wrestling Association Championships thanks to a strong opening-day showing that put the Raiders in 10th place Friday at Abe Lemons Arena.

Kal Holliday (123 pounds), Alejandra Rodriguez (130) and Desiree Zavala (143) each assured themselves top-eight finishes and stayed alive for Saturday's action, which starts at 8 a.m. Pacific Time. Zavala, a freshman from Grandview, Wash., was the only Raider to reach the semifinal round before getting bumped to the consolation bracket and can finish no worse than fifth. All three can still place as high as third.

Nine of SOU's 12 competitors contributed to their point total of 59, however. Anesia Ramirez (123), Gladdys Palma (136), Jasmine Ivey (143) and Nicole Diaz (170) all came up just one win short of reserving spots in placing rounds and clinching All-America status.

Holliday – who will become the first two-time All-American in team history after placing sixth last year – initially reached the 123-pound quarterfinals by starting with 10-0 technical falls over Ottawa's Tiffany Juarez and Adrian's Kassidy Block. Third-ranked Dominique Parrish sent her to the consolation bracket with a 16-10 decision, but she stayed alive with another 10-0 technical fall against Eastern Oregon's Amber Pair. She'd need to win three times Saturday for third place.

The same goes for the fourth-ranked Rodriguez, who fought her way back with three straight wins in the 130-pound consolation rounds. After starting with a bye, she pinned Menlo's Dionnica Tolliver in under a minute but went down against sixth-ranked Cheyenne Youngblood of Missouri Baptist, 12-2, short of the quarterfinals. She started her consolation run with a pair of tech falls – 12-0 over Missouri Baptist's Crystal Zamarripa and 10-0 over Warner Pacific's Rachael Coleck – and finished with a 6-2 decision against King's Nicole Joseph.

Zavala, meanwhile, breezed into the 143-pound semis before she was defeated, 12-0, by top-ranked Mallory Velte of Simon Fraser. To get there, she pinned Jamestown's Pamela Fehr in 1:24, dominated Ottawa's Addie Lanning 11-1, and upset fourth-ranked Jasmine Bailey of McKendree, 10-3, in the quarterfinals. She'll need one win to get into the third-place match Saturday.

Of SOU's near-placers, Ramirez won three straight consolation matches – by fall, technical fall and decision – after dropping her first bout of the day; Palma reached the quarterfinals with consecutive wins by decisions before getting knocked out; Ivey started with a pin and notched two more in the consolations; and Diaz finished with two technical falls and a pin.

Jade Martin (101) contributed two wins by decision and Annastassia Ramirez (116) won her opening match by decision.

The Raiders, who came into the tournament ranked 12th, finished 11th with two All-Americans last season.
