TOURNAMENT CENTRAL
PARK CITY, Kan. – Southern Oregon's
Lillian Gradillas-Flores,
Kat Hingano and
Holland Wieber advanced to the semifinals, and
Vida Boskovic joined them in clinching All-America status during Day 1 of the NAIA Women's Wrestling Championship on Friday at Heartland Credit Union Arena.
The No. 10-ranked Raiders ended the evening session in a tie for eighth place with 55 ½ points, just seven outside of the top-five in the team standings. They were one of six teams to get three or more wrestlers through the quarterfinals. Defending champion Life (Ga.), which leads with 112 ½ points, produced seven such individuals.
The Raiders got at least one victory from eight of their 10 tournament qualifiers and multiple wins from five of them. Wieber, a sophomore at 145 pounds, became their most surprising story, jump-starting her second appearance with a 6-4 upset of Indiana Tech's No. 6-seeded Hayden Newberg. She went on to take two more tight decisions from Eastern Oregon's Veil Foreman and Campbellsville's Gabriella Perez, ensuring she'll finish no worse than sixth place.
Gradillas-Flores and Hingano, both sophomores and now two-time All-Americans, performed as advertised. The top seed at 207, Gradillas-Flores pinned both of her foes in the second round. Seeded No. 2 at 180, Hingano recorded two falls and avoided a second-round stumble with a 4-3 defeat of William Penn's No. 15 Diara Pomares.
Gradillas-Flores will face No. 4 seed Selena Mares of Grand View in the semifinals; the top four wrestlers in her championship bracket are all still alive. Hingano will face Grand View's No. 6 Andjela Prijovic for the right to meet the No. 1 or 4 seed in the finals.
Saturday's action begins at 8 a.m. PDT. The championship rounds are slated for 5 p.m.
Boskovic had the longest road to becoming an All-American at 160, going 4-1 on the day. After needing a wild-card bid to get to the tourney, she started it with a pin of Ottawa's No. 15 Justice Thomas. After losing in the second round, she won three consecutive consolation matches – capping that run with a win by fall over Providence's No. 5 Aspen Dodge.
Lia Ferreira was a win away from her second All-America honor at 103.
Makayla Correa started the day with an upset of the 138-pound bracket's No. 5 seed before bowing out.
