Raiders go to 5-1 with wins over William Jessup, No. 6 Simpson

REDDING, Calif. – Freshman Gabby Sandoval picked up two more wins in relief Saturday as Southern Oregon defeated William Jessup for the second day in a row, 6-5, and knocked off sixth-ranked Simpson, 6-2, at Big League Dreams Park.

Sandoval, who tossed a three-hit shutout Friday against William Jessup, totaled 10 innings of three-hit, scoreless relief and improved to 4-0. Going back to her season debut, she hasn't allowed a run in her last 23 1/3 innings pitched.

Harlee Donovan went 4-for-6 with two runs scored and two RBI on the day, Taylor Martinez was 3-for-5 with a double, and the Raiders had just one fielding error – they've committed three total in six games – while bringing their record to 5-1.

Against WJU (2-2), run-scoring singles by Donovan and Karlee Coughlin gave SOU a 2-0 lead in the first after Kelsey Randall set the table with a leadoff double. The Warriors went ahead with three runs on four singles in the second, but SOU struck back with three more in the bottom half of the inning. Martinez started the rally with a double, Madison Mockley reached on an error, and Randall's squeeze bunt was sandwiched by RBI singles from Tyler Burke and Donovan.

Sandoval took care of the rest after entering as SOU's third pitcher with two in, two on and two out in the third. She set down 13 of the 16 Warriors she saw, needing just one strikeout.

Along with Donovan, Coughlin had two of SOU's eight hits. She, Randall and Kayleen Smith have reached base safely in every game.

Simpson, which hadn't lost in its first five games before meeting the Raiders, set a sloppy tone by committing three errors in the first inning that allowed Randall and Smith to score, but they tied it at 2-2 in the bottom of the second on Amanda Laughlin's one-out double. That's when Sandoval entered again – stranding Laughlin in scoring position and giving up one hit with three strikeouts over the final 5 2/3 frames.

The Raiders, meanwhile, took control with a four-run third inning against Redhawks starter Paris Hallums, who had won 22 of her previous 25 decisions. Their first four batters reached base – Smith walked before Donovan, Coughlin and Martinez singled, with the latter bringing in the go-ahead run. Run-scoring groundouts for Rebecca Velasquez and Abigail Lund brought home two more, and Aaliyah Oliver capped the rally with a line-drive RBI single to left field.

SOU returns to action next weekend at the NAIA So. Cal Classic, hosted by Biola in West Covina, Calif.
