Raiders top Clan, lose to Concordia at Cavalier Classic

By Chris Slack, Sports Info Grad Assistant

PORTLAND
– Southern Oregon wrapped up its nonleague slate against NCAA Division II competition Saturday at the Cavalier Classic, topping Simon Fraser, 3-2, and losing to host Concordia, 4-1, at Porter Park.

Shortstop Kelsey Randall went 3-for-7 on the day with a double, first baseman Taylor Martinez went 3-for-6 with a walk and catcher Nicole Cardoza drove in the winning run for the Raiders, who will enter Cascade Conference play next weekend with a record of 11-3.

Freshman pitcher Karlee Coughlin improved to 4-0 by going 4 2/3 strong innings against the Clan (4-5), allowing four hits and one earned run with a pair of strikeouts. She also helped SOU go up 2-0 in the top of the third inning, which Kayleen Smith led off with a double. Smith scored on a throwing error when SFU tried to catch Rebecca Velasquez stealing, and Coughlin later doubled pinch-runner Paige Leeper home with a two-out double to left.

SFU scored its first run unearned in the third and tied it in the fourth when Hailey Gearey led off with a single, was sacrificed over and then driven in by Robyn Mogavero's hit.

In the fifth, the Raiders put runners on first and second thanks to a walk and an error and, with two outs, Cardoza's single to left brought Leeper home. Gabby Sandoval pitched the final 2 1/3 frames and yielded one hit to pick up her first collegiate save.

Against Concordia (6-6), a former CCC rival that now competes in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, Cavaliers starter Mattie Boucher and reliever Tori Muir combined to allow seven hits and hold the Raiders to fewer than two runs for the first time this season.

Rylleigh Zbaraschuk's solo home run to right field put the Cavs on the board in the third. Later in the inning, Taylor Bussey's single drove in Meghan Luebbert to make it 2-0.

The Raiders scored in the fourth – Abigail Lund hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to plate Coughlin, who had led off with a single – but stranded two baserunners. In the fifth, Luebbert struck with a solo shot to left and Bussey double in Macy Besuyen.

Sandoval took the loss, giving up seven hits and four runs in 4 1/3 innings. Lexie Raasch pitched 1 2/3 of perfect relief.

SOU starts CCC play with doubleheaders next Friday and Saturday at College of Idaho.
