SOU stays hot with 4-3, 5-0 wins against Thunderbirds

MEDFORD – The streak stayed alive and the storylines were familiar for 18th-ranked Southern Oregon as it defeated University of British Columbia by scores of 4-3 and 5-0 on Friday at U.S. Cellular Community Park.

The wins, which were the Raiders' 10th and 11th in a row, made them 23-4 overall and 10-1 in the Cascade Collegiate Conference. They secured the first one when Taylor Martinez lined a double over third base and into the left-field corner, allowing Kristen Mauroschadt to score from first base and the Raiders to walk off with one out in the seventh. Freshman pitcher Karlee Coughlin's fourth straight complete-game victory and second shutout was the story in the second. She threw a four-hitter, improved to 8-0 and has now allowed three runs in her last 26 innings of work.

The Thunderbirds went to 1-14 overall and 0-8 in the CCC. The teams will play Saturday at University Field in Ashland, starting another twin bill at noon.

Harlee Donovan – who padded Coughlin's lead with a three-run triple in the sixth inning of Game 2 – got the Raiders going with a lined two-run home run to left in the first inning of the opener, her third of the season. Kayleen Smith went 3-for-4 and scored her second run on a Rebecca Velasquez single in the third to make it 3-2.

UBC tied it against SOU starter Gabby Sandoval in the fifth, though, as Lindsey Ogilvie singled through the left side to score Hillary Strelau. The Raiders then had two runners in scoring position with no outs in the fifth and stranded them both.

Victoria Mackey bought them some time in relief. She allowed one hit in 2 2/3 innings of work – she's given up three hits and no runs in 15 1/3 frames over six appearances this season – and eventually picked up her third win.

With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Velasquez singled to center field. Mauroschadt, her pinch-runner, scored the winning run standing up on Martinez's double. Martinez went 3-for-4 in the game.

The Raiders went up in the third inning of Game 2 when Kelsey Randall singled, stole second and was driven in by Kayleen Smith's single to center. With two outs, Velasquez singled home Smith.

Coughlin did the rest, striking out two with one walk, 10 groundouts and nine flyouts over 106 pitches.

Martinez, Randall and Aaliyah Oliver had two hits apiece. Randall also extended her hitting streak to 12 games.

During the Raiders' win streak, they've taken the lead in the fourth inning or later eight times and won in their final at-bat five times.
