Boyd's shutout gives Corban conference sweep of SOU

SALEM Lexie Raasch's impressive start against the Cascade Conference's most productive lineup was spoiled by a few defensive miscues and Sabrina Boyd's shutout as Corban defeated Southern Oregon for the third game in a row, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon at Warrior Field.

The Warriors (12-3 CCC) supplanted the 18th-ranked Raiders (11-4) in first place with a sweep of the three-game CCC portion of the four-game series. SOU, Eastern Oregon and Oregon Tech are tied in second place.

SOU hadn't been shut out in 43 games dating back to last season. Boyd (12-2), who also went the distance in Corban's 5-2 victory in Saturday's opener, recorded one strikeout and one walk while working around nine Raider hits, all singles.

The Raiders left nine runners on base in the game and 30 in the series. They had the potential tying run at the plate in the sixth when Nicole Cardoza lined into a double play. Harlee Donovan was up with the bases loaded and two outs in the seventh but flied out to deep right.

Raasch (3-1) did her best to keep them in it, allowing eight hits with two strikeouts and one walk in her complete game. Corban scored its only earned run in the first inning as Taylor Eilders led off with a single and scored on an Iris Rodriguez hit.

Aubrene Blas started Corban's half of the third with a double and eventually scored on a play that resulted in a fielding and a throwing error. With two outs, Sam Woodley's single to right made it 3-0.

Donovan, Tyler Burke, Abigail Lund and Taylor Martinez had two hits apiece for the Raiders. Kelsey Randall's 1-for-4 outing took her hitting streak to 17 games.

In the nonconference contest, the Raiders (25-8 overall, 11-4 CCC) were again held scoreless and lost to the Warriors (26-6, 13-3) on a throwing error in the seventh inning, 1-0, in the series finale.

SOU starter Lacie Crawford took a four-hit shutout into the seventh. She walked Paige Martin with one out and Martin's pinch-runner, Ashlyn Englehorn, was sacrificed over by Raimee Sluder. The Raiders got Sluder at first, but Englehorn kept running and a throwing error to the plate allowed her to come home safely.

The Raiders outhit Corban for the third time in the series, 5-4, but Allie Mendez kept them off the board. They had two opportunities with runners at third base, stranding Kelsey Randall in the third and Tyler Burke in the fourth.

SOU was shut out in back-to-back games for the first time since 2014.

Crawford (0-2), the tough-luck loser, had four strikeouts and issued four walks in her strong start.

Randall went 2-for-3 and extended her hitting streak to 18 games, tying the record Kayleen Smith set last season. Smith, Burke and Taylor Martinez each registered a hit.
