Mackey stays perfect as Raiders, Carroll split

By Chris Slack, Sports Info Grad Assistant

HELENA, Mont.
– The 18th-ranked Southern Oregon softball team split a twin bill with Carroll on Saturday, completing a sweep of the Cascade Conference portion of their series with a 6-0 win before having its 10-game win streak snapped with a 4-3 nonleague loss in the finale at Centennial Park.

In Game 1, Victoria Mackey made her first start of the season and improved to 5-0 with a three-hit shutout, striking out six without a walk while maintaining a spotless ERA in 37 innings this season. The top third of SOU's lineup – Kelsey Randall (4-for-4), Kayleen Smith (2-for-4) and Harlee Donovan (3-for-4) – combined for nine of the team's 13 hits, four runs and five RBI, and Karlee Coughlin hit a pair of doubles.

The Raiders (35-10 overall, 19-5 Cascade Conference) gave Mackey two runs to work with in the first inning as Randall singled, Smith drove her in with a double and Donovan hit an RBI single. They scored their other four runs in the fifth with the help of two errors. Smith hit a two-run single and Donovan another run-scoring it.

Abigail Lund had SOU's other two hits.

In Game 2, SOU out-hit the Saints 11-8 but left nine baserunners stranded. Kaydee Parsons and Megan Gipe drove in Carroll's first two-runs in the second inning and Anna ApRoberts made it 3-0 with an RBI single in the third.

Taylor Martinez's fifth home run of the season got SOU on the board in the fourth and Donovan drove in Smith with a single in the fifth, cutting the deficit to 3-2, but Brittany Hogan answered with a solo homer in the bottom of the fifth for Carroll. Smith knocked in Lund in the sixth, but the Raiders left the potential tying and go-ahead runs on base.

Lacie Crawford (2-3) took the loss. Gabby Sandoval allowed three hits and one run in four innings of relief.

Randall, Smith and Donovan had two more hits apiece for the Raiders.

SOU, still two games back of first-place
Corban, concludes the regular season in Ashland next Friday and Saturday against Eastern Oregon.
