Donovan, Raiders power past Northwest Christian

ASHLAND Harlee Donovan supplied the power but was hardly alone in peppering Northwest Christian pitching as Southern Oregon secured another series victory Friday at University Field.

Donovan, a junior catcher/third baseman, hit home runs in both games – a two-run liner in a 14-1, five-inning opener that made SOU 2-1 in the Cascade Conference portion of the series, and a three-run shot that marked her fifth of the season in the 9-3 non-conference finale.

The Raiders (28-9 overall, 13-5 CCC) totaled 30 hits on the day and 60 in the four-game stand. They did it first in support of Lacie Crawford (2-2), who went all five innings in Game 1 for her third consecutive complete game while allowing five hits with five strikeouts and one walk. She earned both CCC victories against the Beacons.

Karlee Coughlin got the Game 2 decision after pitching four innings of three-hit, scoreless relief with four strikeouts and a walk. She came on for starter Lexie Raasch, who yielded two earned runs in three innings and departed with a 6-3 lead.

The Beacons dropped to 3-28 overall and 3-15 in circuit play.

Donovan had four RBI and three runs scored in Game 1 and finished 4-for-6 with seven RBI and four runs on the afternoon. Taylor Martinez had another five hit day, finishing the series 10-for-13 with three doubles and four RBI. And Kelsey Randall had two hits in both games, scoring four runs and keeping her hitting streak alive at 22 games.

The Raiders scored three runs in the first inning, four in the second and seven in the third of Game 1. Kayleen Smith went 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBI, while Tiana Brown and Abigail Lund both had two hits, an RBI and a run scored.

They also struck twice in the first inning of the finale as Smith and Martinez both drove in runs, and Donovan launched her three-run shot to left in the second to put them up 6-0. Smith added a two-run double to the opposite field in the fifth, and Martinez contributed another RBI single in the sixth.

Tra Kucera had a two-run double for the Beacons. She, Jessica Garner and Madison Jones had two hits apiece, and Caitlyn Messman had a two-hit game in the opener.

The Raiders are now 11-1 at home this season. They'll be back on the road next weekend for a pivotal four-game series at 25th-ranked Oregon Tech.
