Top-ranked Stars direct SOU to elimination bracket

CLERMONT, Florida – Oklahoma City pitcher Georgia Wall did to Southern Oregon on Saturday night what she's done to so many others throughout the season – 29 others, to be exact.

Wall three-hit the Raiders, letting just one escape the infield, and the top-ranked Stars (65-1 overall) broke through with three runs in the fifth inning on their way to a 4-0 defeat of the 20th-ranked and eighth-seeded Raiders on the second day of the NAIA World Series at Legends Way Ballfields.

Wall brought her spotless record to 30-0 with her 11th shutout, striking out five with one walk as her earned-run average dipped to 0.67. OCU, the nine-time and defending champion, had Friday off as the top seed while SOU (45-13) advanced with a 4-3 win against Indiana Wesleyan. The Stars play next on Monday against fifth-seeded LSU Alexandria, two wins away from a spot in another title round.

The Raiders will play an elimination game at 9:30 a.m. Pacific Time on Monday against seventh-seeded and 19th-ranked Warner (Fla.) (29-14), which stayed alive Saturday by defeating Marian (Ind.), 6-3, in an elimination contest.

Freshman pitcher Gabby Sandoval matched Wall through four scoreless innings, working out of two-on pickles in the third and fourth. In the fifth, Kali Pugh and Jaci Smith hit consecutive one-out singles and Madison Ellis drove them both in with a double to deep left-center field. After Smith was called out trying to stretch to third, OCU coach Phil McSpadden got tossed for arguing the call. And after McSpadden was escorted off the diamond, McRae Cayton and Laci Joyner ripped back-to-back doubles to make it 3-0.

Pugh and Smith, representing the top of Stars lineup, both had two of the team's 10 hits. Sandoval (14-7) allowed eight of them in 5 2/3 innings of work, striking out four and walking three.

The Stars have not lost to an NAIA team this season. They'd also scored four or fewer runs just nine times before Saturday.

Tyler Burke was responsible for two of SOU's hits and Kelsey Randall had the other.

Warner, which came out of the Sun Conference, had never won an NAIA World Series game before Saturday. The Royals dropped their tournament opener to 10th-seeded Ottawa (Kan.), 4-2.
