Coughlin, Raiders blank Owls in CCC Tournament opener

SALEM – The Southern Oregon softball team still has Oregon Tech's number, and by keeping that true, the 20th-ranked Raiders began the Cascade Collegiate Conference Tournament on a high note for the first time Saturday.

Freshman pitchers Karlee Coughlin collected her 14th victory with her third shutout of the season, Taylor Martinez and Kelsey Randall had three hits apiece, and the third-seeded Owls came unglued in a five-run third inning that keyed second-seeded SOU's 7-0 win at Warrior Field. The Raiders (38-12 overall) had been 0-4 in their previous CCC Tournament openers.

They advanced to play at 2 p.m. Sunday against top-seeded and 15th-ranked Corban for a spot in Monday's championship round, which begins at 1:30 p.m. The loser will play an elimination game at 11 a.m. Monday.

Coughlin, whose earned-run average dipped to 2.36, has defeated OIT (32-14) three times in 2017. The complete game was her 10th. She spun the four-hitter without a strikeout or a walk and retired 11 of the last 12 batters she faced, keeping former CCC players of the year Tara Moates and Ali Graham hitless.

Randall went 3-for-3 with a triple – her eighth of the season, tying an SOU record – a walk, two runs scored, an RBI and a few dazzling plays at shortstop. She also started SOU's third-inning rally with a one-out liner up the middle in a scoreless game.

The next two batters, Kayleen Smith and Harlee Donovan, reached on bobbled groundballs to load the bases. Tyler Burke then yanked a sharply hit grounder that was stopped on a dive by second baseman Cassidy Hoglund, but she speeded to first without a play while Randall and Smith came home. Martinez, who went 3-for-4 with a double, hit an infield single to pack the bases again. Coughlin's RBI groundout made it 3-0, and with two gone Paige Leeper capped the rally with a two-run single to the opposite field.

The fielding woes followed OIT to the sixth, which Leeper started by reaching on another error. Randall tripled her home, and Smith's grounder resulted in another error that plated Randall.

SOU is 5-0 against OIT and committed two errors in those games to the Owls' eight. The Raiders also defeated OIT in an elimination game last season.

Loryn Williams took the loss, though she and Graham, who relieved her in the fourth, were not charged with any earned runs.

The Raiders will be attempting to deliver payback to Corban, which swept a four-game series against them during the regular season.
