Raiders hold off #15 Northwest Christian, 66-54

EUGENE – Northwest Christian kept the pressure on but Southern Oregon didn't wilt in a top-15 matchup Friday night at the Morse Event Center, winning 66-54 to break a second-place tie in the Cascade Conference standings.

In their eighth consecutive victory, the No. 10 Raiders (15-1 overall, 7-1 CCC) led the No. 15 Beacons (13-2, 6-2) for the final 34 minutes behind Remi Mejia's 18 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Their 11-point lead at the start of the fourth quarter was down to four with three minutes to go, but they kept NCU scoreless the rest of the way.

The Beacons, who hold their highest-ever position in the NAIA Division II coaches' poll, became the first nationally-ranked opponent SOU has defeated in a CCC regular-season road game since the 2008-09 season.

Their season-low point total this season was the result of SOU advantages of 22-9 in turnovers forced and 18-10 on the offensive glass. They shot at a slightly higher clip from the field – 38 percent to SOU's 31 – but finished with 35 fewer field-goal attempts.

Raider forward Ariel Augustine totaled 13 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Point guard Toria Bradford had 13 points, four assists and two steals.

Down 8-7 midway through the first quarter, the Raiders went on an 11-3 run keyed by 3-pointers by Mejia and Kenadee Honaker that put them ahead for good. Mejia hit a couple more 3s in the second quarter – she went 4-of-10 downtown for the game, her 11th straight with three or more makes from downtown – and the Raiders went into halftime with a 42-36 lead.

They shot just 8-of-31 in the second half but limited the Beacons to 6-of-23 accuracy.

NCU stayed in the game behind a pair of freshman forward, Anamaria Virjoghe (16 points, 8 rebounds) and Morgan McKinney (16 points, 9 rebounds).

The Raiders have now won seven straight matchups between the teams. They'll travel to Salem on Saturday, facing Corban at 5:30 p.m.
