Raiders fend off Eagles, move to 8-3 in CCC

ASHLAND – Southern Oregon is still unbeaten at home in Cascade Conference play, but Northwest (Wash.) was the latest team to provide a scare in a 92-87 decision on Sunday evening at Mountain Avenue Gym.

Ben DeSaulnier, Tate Hoffman and Tristen Holmes scored 19 points apiece and each came through in the clutch to help the 23rd-ranked Raiders (13-7 overall, 8-3 CCC) hang on. They were up for the duration of the second half, but never by more than seven points as the Eagles (9-12, 3-8) stayed within striking range by shooting 50 percent.

SOU led 79-77 with 2:19 left when DeSaulnier dished off to Hoffman for a 3 on the wing. After the Eagles scored on the other end, Holmes drove the lane and scored inside at the end of the shot clock to make it 84-79.

DeSaulnier shot 6-of-8 from the field – he also had four assists – and was perfect on four free throws in the final minute. With six seconds left, Kenny Meyer iced the win with two more.

The Raiders shot 53 percent from the field (31-of-58), their highest clip in 10 games, and 21-of-23 at the line. Hoffman, Holmes, Aaron Borich and Conor Carroll made two 3-pointers apiece – Hoffman and Holmes also combined for 17 rebounds – and Carroll's triple at the first-half buzzer put SOU up 46-39. He finished with 13 points.

Tre Benton's 22 points and five assists led the Eagles, while Justice Martion scored 18.

Of the Raiders' eight CCC victories, five have been within four points in the final minute. They've still yet to lose against a sub-.500 team at home since the 2012-13 season.

Going into next week's road trip to Multnomah and Warner Pacific, they're one of three teams with three losses behind first-place College of Idaho, whose only loss has been to SOU. WPC and Eastern Oregon, which the Raiders have also defeated, are the others.
