Former Raider Rosas makes NFL Pro Bowl

Former Southern Oregon University kicker Aldrick Rosas has continued to defy the odds as a member of the New York Giants, and his near-automatic right leg has earned him a spot in the NFL Pro Bowl.

The selections, as voted on by fans, coaches and players, were announced Tuesday by the NFL. Rosas, who played for the Raiders during the 2013 and '14 seasons, was named the starting kicker for the NFC squad.

"I don't know how to describe it – shocking," Rosas said according Giants.com. "Just to get that support and votes from my peers and the fans and everybody in the building, this organization just being behind me, it's real special."

The Pro Bowl will be held Jan. 27 in Orlando, Fla. Rosas became the third ex-Raider to ever appear in the NFL when he debuted with the Giants last season; he's the first to get the all-star nod.

In his second season with the Giants, he's converted 28-of-29 field goals – making his the second-best percentage (.966) in the NFL – and 25-of-26 point-after attempts.

On Dec. 2 against the Chicago Bears, he set a franchise record with a 57-yard make and later converted a 44-yard game-winning field goal in overtime. He was subsequently named the NFC's Special Teams Player of the Week.

With two games to go, Rosas has already tied the Giants record for 50-plus-yard field goals in a season with four. His only miss was a 52-yarder.

The progress has been dramatic from his rookie campaign, when he went 18-of-25 on field-goal tries and 20-of-23 on extra points.

Rosas hit 25-of-32 field goals in his two years at SOU. He also set a team record by connecting on 116 consecutive point-after attempts, and 123 of his 204 kickoffs went for touchbacks.

During SOU's 55-31 win over Marian (Ind.) in the 2014 national championship game, he suffered a torn ACL in his kicking leg. It marked the end of his Raider career, but after undergoing surgery in February of 2015, he got back to work in his hometown of Orland, Calif. He was invited to camp by the Tennessee Titans a year later, and the Giants came calling when he was cut.

"You hate to say you have favorite players, but he's one of my favorites," Giants coach Pat Shurmur told Giants.com's Dan Salomone. "You've heard me talk about how he's not just a kicker, he's a football player. He's a big guy, he's got a presence, and he's competitive. So I appreciate all the good in Aldrick and the fact that he was recognized is great."

The Giants are 5-9 going into Sunday's game against the Indianapolis Colts.
