ASHLAND – Southern Oregon's winning streak ended at three games on Sunday against one of the Cascade Conference's best. To solidify their spot in the upper half of the standings and avoid being knocked out of title contention early, the Raiders must now take care of business against two teams that are chasing them.
SOU (5-5 overall, 3-2 CCC), one of four teams with two losses behind first-place Corban (6-0 CCC) and second-place Rocky Mountain (5-1 CCC), will play four of its next six at home as it begins to navigate through the final month of the regular season. The stretch starts on the Raider Stadium turf at noon Friday against College of Idaho (4-4, 2-3) – kickoff was pushed back an hour this week – and 11 a.m. Saturday against Eastern Oregon (4-5-1, 2-3).
LAST WEEK IN REVIEW: SOU hit double figures for the second time this season in last Friday's 10-0 win at Walla Walla (Wash.) during which freshman
Adrian Villegas tied single-game team records for points and assists with two goals and three helpers.
Junior Rivas added two goals and an assist and
Alan Gaytan punched in two more as the Raiders out-shot the Wolves 36-2. In Sunday's 2-1 loss at Rocky Mountain (Mont.), Gaytan netted an equalizer in the 74th minute but RMC's Sky Swenson won it with his second goal of the game in the 87th. It marked the Bears' first victory against SOU since 2016.
BRIEFLY:
- The Raiders are 14-0-1 in their last 15 CCC home contests dating back to 2017. They've turned in shutouts in 13 of those games.
- SOU is 4-0 all-time against Eastern Oregon, having never given up a goal to the Mountaineers, and 4-1 against College of Idaho with four straight head-to-head wins.
- Adrian Villegas ranks second in the CCC in total points with 18 (7 goals, 4 assists). He's three away from matching SOU's single-season points record, established last year by freshman Noah Addie.
- After going scoreless in his first seven collegiate appearances, freshman Alan Gaytan has four goals in his last three. Only five circuit players own more goals in CCC games.
- Michael Miller's assist total of five is the third-best in the CCC. Kelly Gieber is tied with alum Ahmon Afenegus as SOU's career leader with 16.
- The Raiders have out-shot all but three of their opponents. Of their five losses, four game-winners have scored in the 70th minute or later.
NAIA TOP 25: After dropping out last week, the CCC was represented again in
Wednesday's latest NAIA Top 25 coaches' poll by No. 24 Corban. Rocky, meanwhile, is receiving the seventh-most votes among unranked teams. SOU will get its shot at Corban next Friday in Salem.
ABOUT COLLEGE OF IDAHO: The Yotes are coming off a 2-0 win against Carroll that was preceded by a 2-1 loss to Providence in Caldwell. Picked eighth in the CCC preseason poll, they've outscored opponents 13-12 behind Ben Bechor (4 goals, 3 assists), Jack O'Leary (3 goals, 1 assist) and Ahmet Huremovic (3 goals), all upperclassmen. Their keeper, Parker Billings, has a .711 save average.
ABOUT EASTERN OREGON: The Mountaineers were picked fourth in the CCC and their 22-20 aggregate goals disadvantage was skewed by a 6-1 loss at Corban. Since then, they've defeated C of I (3-2) and Carroll (4-1) and lost to Providence (2-1). They're prone to overtime, having required extra sessions five times, including each of the first four games of the season. Their attack depends on juniors Javier Moran (4 goals, 2 assists) and Patrick Larsen (2 goals, 3 assists), and their keepers have posted a pedestrian .560 save average.
