ASHLAND – Fifth-ranked College of Idaho's vaunted zone defense was true to form as the Yotes turned a five-point halftime edge into a 70-49 rout of No. 18 Southern Oregon in Cascade Conference play Saturday night at Lithia Motors Pavilion.
The Yotes (11-3 overall, 4-0 CCC), who have boasted the circuit's top defense each of the past three seasons, held the Raiders (8-4, 2-2) to a dismal 29-percent mark from the field – their worst showing in six seasons – and outscored them 38-22 in the second half to complete a sweep of their trip to Ashland and Oregon Tech.
Connor DeSaulniers dominated inside with 17 points on 8-of-12 shooting and nine rebounds to lead four Yotes in double figures. Nate Bruneel had 13, Talon Pinckney scored 11 and Jalen Galloway added 11 more off the bench.
SOU hit three 3-pointers in the game's first six minutes and opened up an 18-10 lead midway through the first half before going cold.
The Raiders' last lead was 27-26 with 2:41 left in the first. A 20-4 C of I run that extended through the opening seven minutes of the second half ensued.
Tez Allen had team-highs of nine points, eight rebounds and three steals for SOU.
Teron Bradford totaled eight points and three assists and
Aaron Borich had seven points and four assists.
SOU leading scorer
Tate Hoffman – who in Friday's win over Eastern Oregon went for a career-high 30 points and 11 rebounds – was bottled up in a 1-of-11 outing, and the Raiders went 16-of-55 as a team.
The Yotes had dropped four of their previous five games in Ashland.
SOU will play next on Jan. 3-4, meeting Warner Pacific and Multnomah in Portland.
