KIRKLAND, Wash. – Northwest (Wash.) center Sam Van Loo dominated with 30 points and nine rebounds and keyed a decisive third-quarter run that opened up the Eagles' 84-67 win against the Southern Oregon women's basketball team Friday night at Brodin Pavilion.
The Cascade Conference opener for both teams was a one-point game before the Eagles (2-6) blew it up with a 20 straight to take a 60-39 lead with just under three minutes left in the third quarter.
Van Loo, a 6-foot-2 sophomore, scored eight points during the charge and went 14-of-17 on the night, taking advantage of holes in the middle of SOU's trapping defense for mid-range jumper after jumper. With Maya DuChesne shooting 4-of-5 with 12 points, six rebounds and six assists, the Eagles hit at a 53-percent clip from the field.
Syd'Nee Fryer logged her fourth career double-double with season-highs of 22 points and 10 rebounds for the Raiders (4-4).
Daranda Hinkey scored 15 points, accounting for half of SOU's six 3-pointers, and
Dominique Harding contributed 13.
SOU shot 35 percent as a team and was limited to six bench points compared to Northwest's 23.
The lead changed eight times in the first half, though the Raiders went into the break trailing 35-31.
They'll try to split the road trip Saturday at Evergreen (Wash.), tipping off at 5:30 p.m. The Geoducks lost their CCC opener to Oregon Tech, 63-56.
