Southern Oregon University's Ryan Alexander, Zach Beltz and Gabby Sandoval garnered Cascade Conference Red Lion Athlete of the Week recognition on Monday following standout performances over the weekend, the league office announced.
At Sacramento State's Hornet Invitational on Saturday, Alexander ran a two-second personal best of 3 minutes 54.37 seconds in the 1,500 meters to meet the NAIA Championships provisional-qualifying mark. The senior's time put him at No. 1 on the national performance list and placed him 15th of 88 in the NCAA-heavy race.
Beltz, a senior All-American, won the 49-person long jump with a mark of 24 feet 8 1/2 inches and to clear the automatic-qualifying standard and placed fifth of 26 in the triple jump with an NAIA 'B' mark of 47-5 3/4. He shot to Nos. 1 and 2 on the respective NAIA performance lists in his first competition of the outdoor season.
As a team, the Raiders met 10 NAIA qualifying standards at the meet. They also saw a school record fall, as freshman KiAshe Hobby recorded a throw of 155-3 in the women's hammer.
Meanwhile, the Raider softball team was named the CCC Adidas Team of the Week with a big lift from Sandoval, who received the CCC Pitcher of the Week award for the fourth time this season.
Sandoval picked up all three CCC wins in third-ranked SOU's four-game sweep of Oregon Tech — tossing a three-hit shutout on Saturday, a two-hitter in which she didn't allow an earned run on Sunday, and getting an addition win with 5 1/3 innings of relief work in the second game of the series.
Sandoval went to 14-1 overall and 8-0 in conference play for the Raiders (21-4, 8-1 CCC), who moved into a tie for first place in the standings. She ranks first nationally in wins and innings pitched (99 2/3) and owns a microscopic earned-run average of 1.19 with six total shutouts.
