PRESCOTT, Ariz. –
Adrian Villegas and
Yan Pessoa de Oliveira tallied in the first half and the 13th-ranked Southern Oregon men's soccer team held off Benedictine (Ariz.) in the second for a 2-1 victory on Friday at Embry-Riddle's Varsity Field.
Playing their penultimate non-conference game, the Raiders (2-2-0) went up for good in the 19th minute when Villegas, a freshman from Hood River, scored his team-leading fourth goal thanks to assists from
Kelly Gieber and
Michael Miller.
Miller also assisted Pessoa de Oliveira's first goal of the season just five minutes later. The Cascade Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 2018, Miller entered the contest with only two assists in his four-year Raider career.
SOU got off 16 shots to Benedictine's eight. Benedictine didn't break up the shutout until Junior Sewell scored in the 83rd minute.
Benedictine, which went 9-2 last year in the California Pacific Conference, dropped to 1-2.
SOU will stay in Prescott to play Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
