ASHLAND – Southern Oregon University sophomore Julissa Taitano became the first Raider to receive the NAIA Women's Wrestler of the Week award on Wednesday, two days after earning the Cascade Conference's Red Lion weekly honor.

Competing in the 136-pound bracket, Taitano contributed a team-high 15 points to SOU's cause Friday at the Menlo Invitational, where the Raiders edged the host and NAIA top-ranked Oaks by one point and finished second in the standings to Simon Fraser.

Taitano went 4-1 overall, winning her first four matches of the day by decision, fall, injury default and decision to earn runner-up status. The San Jose, Calif., product is currently ranked fourth in the NAIA in her weight class.

Taitano became the second Raider this season to receive the CCC honor. On Dec. 23, Macie Stewart earned wrestler-of-the-week status after claiming the 109-pound title with three bonus-point wins at the West Coast Tournament of Champions.

Though the Raiders are off this week, head coach Joel Gibson announced another piece of news Wednesday: SOU has added another home dual to its schedule, hosting Eastern Oregon on Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. The Raiders and Mountaineers were originally scheduled to match up in Portland, where they would compete at the Oregon State Tournament the next day, but the trip to the tournament has been canceled.

The Raiders will be in action next on Jan. 17-18, when they'll compete at the Oregon Classic in Bend.
