ASHLAND – Southern Oregon's defense nudged Northwest (Wash.) toward a messy 26-percent shooting night and
Syd'Nee Fryer took care of clean-up duties with 18 rebounds in a 59-42 win Saturday at Lithia Motors Pavilion.
Fryer's fourth double-double included 13 first-half boards, as SOU built a 26-19 lead by halftime, and 11 points. The 5-foot-9 junior's final tally was the highest for a Raider since Jackie Speer broke the program record with 28 on Nov. 14, 2009.
The Raiders stayed in third place with the win, going to 15-7 overall and 11-4 in the Cascade Conference. They're tied in the loss column but a win ahead of Corban in the standings going into next weekend's contests at first-place NCU and Corban.
With their 10th triumph in 12 games, they also clinched a winning conference record for the eighth year in a row and a CCC Tournament berth for the 14th straight season.
Northwest slipped to 7-16 and 5-8 in the CCC, settling for the weekend split. The Eagles were led by Lexi Biggerstaff's 10 points and Sam Van Loo's eight points and nine rebounds.
After a slow start offensively, the Raiders got into a rhythm after the break and shot 13-of-28 in the second half.
Dominique Harding scored eight of her 11 after halftime and totaled five rebounds and four steals, while
Kami Walk had eight points and eight rebounds and
Daranda Hinkey pitched in seven points and four assists.
SOU had a 22-6 edge in bench points and
Danasia Allison provided a spark with six of them and four steals.
Up 34-28 midway through the third, the Raiders got comfortable with a 9-0 run finished by Fryer's 3-pointer in the opening minute of the fourth. During that stretch, the Eagles went nine misses and three turnovers between points.
NU's point total was the lowest for a Raider opponent since they held Simpon (Calif.) to 41 in the season opener.
