SOU puts up 123 on Multnomah to clinch No. 2 seed

ASHLAND – The seventh-ranked Southern Oregon men's basketball team registered its highest point total in six seasons behind Jordan Hunt's career-high 24 points and scored a 123-75 win against Multnomah to clinch second place outright in the Cascade Conference on Friday night at Lithia Motors Pavilion.

Hunt, a senior forward from New Zealand, shot 12-of-15 from the field to hit the 20-point mark for the 11th time in his career and pulled down seven rebounds. He was responsible for 14 of the Raiders' first 16 points and, after they fell behind 19-14, started a 19-3 run that put them firmly in control.

The win was Brian McDermott's 400th as head coach of the Raiders, who went to 21-6 overall and 15-4 in CCC play. They'll complete the regular-season slate at 7:30 p.m. Saturday against Warner Pacific before opening the CCC Championships presented by U.S. Bank at home Wednesday in the quarterfinal round. With the No. 2 seed, they'll have hosting rights through next Saturday's semifinals.

Against the Lions (14-15, 7-12), they got career-highs from two more seniors: Aaron Borich set a new personal mark with 10 assists to go with his nine points, and Kerry Cook scored 16 with 4-of-5 shooting from 3-point range to go with his five boards.

Tate Hoffman contributed 10 points, seven rebounds and six assists, Jake Virga scored all 12 of his points on a 4-of-6 display from 3, and Tez Allen and Teron Bradford added nine points and five assists apiece.

While opening up the Lions' zone defense, the Raiders totaled 37 assists – their highest total in at least two decades – on 50 buckets and shot a season-best 58 percent from the field. Their 15 makes from downtown also matched a season high.

SOU held Justin Martin, the NAIA's top scorer, to 18 points – a touch over half his average – on 6-of-21 shooting. The Lions shot 34 percent overall.

Kiefer Edwards added eight points and four rebounds and Hunter Bradford scored seven with four boards for SOU.

McDermott, who celebrated his 500th cumulative win in November, is the first SOU head coach to win 400 at the school.
