GREAT FALLS, Mont. – Providence (Mont.) put the first dent in the Southern Oregon men's soccer team's record Saturday, winning 2-0 at Argo Field behind goalkeeper Evan Scholes' six-save effort.
The Argos (2-4-1 overall, 2-2-1 Cascade Conference) only had three shots on target but cashed in two of them, taking the lead in the seventh minute on Tomeu Nebot Schmalfe's far-post strike. In the 50th, he assisted Jack Rimstad to double the advantage.
The Raiders, who matched the longest winning streak in team history with Friday's 2-1 win at Rocky Mountain (Mont.), dropped to 8-1 and 4-1 in the CCC. They're now among five teams in the CCC with one conference loss.
The numbers suggested they deserved better at UP. They ran up advantages of 21-5 in shots, 6-3 in shots on goal and 6-2 in corner kicks. It didn't matter, and they were shut out for the first time in 10 games dating back to the spring.
They'll get a chance to rebound at home, playing last-place Walla Walla (Wash.) at 3 p.m. Friday. At 1 p.m. Saturday, they'll turn around to host Carroll (Mont.).
