SOU handles Warriors in home finale

ASHLAND – The Southern Oregon men's soccer team made a statement Sunday with its first-ever regular season defeat of Corban, a 2-0 Cascade Conference decision.

On a rainy afternoon at Raider Stadium, the Raiders (13-2 overall, 9-2 CCC) experienced minimal discomfort while limiting the Warriors (9-6, 8-4) to one shot on goal. They got their lead in the 19th minute when Alan Gaytan punched in a penalty kick, then cruised after Renee Resendez's header gave them a two-goal cushion in the 34th.

"I thought we played with a balance of intensity and calm throughout the game and contained any threats from Corban," SOU coach Davie Carmichael said. "It was a good overall team performance. We had some great opportunities to end the game earlier, but we played with pride and honored our seniors."

SOU clinched no worse than third place and a higher seed than the Warriors, who started the week receiving votes in the NAIA Top 25 poll but ended it with their highest CCC loss total since 2014 after also going down at Oregon Tech.

The Raiders will finish the regular season next Friday at Warner Pacific – which is tied with OIT for first place, three points ahead of SOU – and Saturday at Multnomah.

Their first goal against the Warriors was also thanks to Adrian Villegas, who slipped a pass through the defense in the box, and Joao de Santos, who was tripped while retrieving it and drew a foul and yellow card on Corban's Carlos Llamosa.

Gaytan cashed in the resulting PK for his ninth goal of the season and fifth game-winner.

Resendez got his first goal of 2021 on his senior day with a header that was set up by a pass that Zak Woolley headed in his direction.

SOU has shut out three consecutive opponents for the first time since 2018. The Warriors had only been blanked in one other game this season.
