ASHLAND – Southern Oregon's fifth-set woes have swung the season to this point, and they got in the way of the Raiders' momentum-building efforts again on Wednesday night at Lithia Motors Pavilion.
Oregon Tech took home its first win in Ashland since 2005 by scores of 25-22, 25-19, 24-26, 23-25 and 15-10, quelling SOU's upset bid behind setter Courtney Isom's 51 assists, 14 digs and four kills. Isom directed a .297 attack, guided three attackers into double-figure kill totals – Faith Houck-Wylie (16), Nicole Reyes (16) and Kaylin Talonen (15) – and helped the Owls overcome 20 service errors.
The Raiders sunk to 9-8 overall and 4-8 in Cascade Conference play. They've dropped all four of their CCC matches that have gone to a tiebreaker set.
The fourth-place Owls completed a sweep of the head-to-head season series, improving to 13-4 overall and 9-3 in the CCC.
In the fifth, they were tied 6-all following one of their four service errors of the set before taking control with four straight points – a run started by Ashley Ripplinger's block and capped by back-to-back errant SOU attacks. The Raiders cut the lead to 11-9 but then committed two more unforced errors, and consecutive Reyes kills eventually ended the match.
The Raiders had stayed alive by ending the fourth set on a 7-2 run, getting five kills from
Hailey Van Well in the frame.
SOU's
Simone Gordon recorded a team-high 19 kills on 37 attacks, Van Well had 16 and
Shelby Young added 13. Setter
Taylor Russell went for 38 assists and 16 digs, while
Kadyn Jones (23) and
Karina Oliveira (11) combined for 34 more digs.
Lindsey Sampson contributed five of OIT's 10 aces and added 11 digs. The Owls made up for some of their service struggles by committing just three reception errors.
SOU will be at home for two more this week, facing Walla Walla (Wash.) at 12:30 p.m. Friday and Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) at 7 p.m. Saturday.
