TOURNAMENT CENTRAL
MARSHALL, Mo. – Southern Oregon's
Sienna Ramirez won eight consecutive consolation matches to claim third-place in the 155-pound bracket and lead the Raiders to seventh out of 36 in the team standings Friday and Saturday at the Missouri Valley Open.
SOU was third among NAIA teams with 94 ½ points, finishing behind only fourth-ranked Grand View (Iowa) (119 ½) and top-ranked Life (Ga.) (110). King (Tenn.) won the overall title with 244 points.
The Raiders had two placers in addition to Ramirez:
Emily Se, who was fifth at 136, and
Carolina Moreno, the seventh-place finisher at 123.
Ramirez, the NAIA's top-ranked wrestler at 155, improved to 18-2 on the season. After dropping her opening match by 4-3 decision to King's Tiffani Baublitz, she dominated the rest of the way with four pins and four technical falls. She ended the third-place match by 12-2 technical fall against unattached wrestler Aurum Taylor.
Se advanced to the 136 semifinals by running off three straight pins to start the tournament. She was sent to the consolation bracket by King's Ana Luciano and lost her consolation semifinal to Texas Wesleyan's Lexi Basham, but recovered in the fifth-place match with a pin of Providence (Mont.)'s Paige Respicio in 31 seconds.
At 123, Moreno put together a strong 5-2 showing over two days. She triumphed in her first three matches to reach the quarterfinals – winning by fall, technical fall and decision. After going down in the quarters, she recorded another pin in the consolation round, and after taking her second loss, she won the seventh-place match by 12-8 decision against King's Makayla Welch.
Elsewhere for the Raiders,
Emma Baertlein (109) and
Jordynn Robson (130) went 3-2,
Bailey Dennis won by fall twice, and
Valeree Ornelas (109),
Macie Stewart (109) and
Carolina Johnson (116) registered two bonus-point victories apiece.
SOU will have representatives at Sunday's Spokane Open and compete on Dec. 3 in Great Falls, Mont., at the Battle of the Rockies.
