Raiders knock off CCC favorite Bushnell

ASHLAND – Another statement came through loud and clear from the Southern Oregon women's basketball team Friday with a defeat of the defending Cascade Conference champions.

The Raiders picked a good night to heat up from downtown and led for the entirety of the second half in a 69-62 victory over Bushnell at Lithia Motors Pavilion, running their winning streak to nine games. They became the last unbeaten team standing in conference play, improving to 11-1 overall and 4-0 in the CCC.

Kami Walk totaled 18 points and six rebounds. The attention she demanded inside also opened up the 3-point area, where the Raiders shot 10-of-22 and had a 21-point advantage over the Beacons (4-5, 2-2).

Point guard Brianna Phiakhamngon converted all four of her 3-point attempts and shot 5-of-6 overall to score 14 points. Syd'Nee Fryer added 14 more and went 3-of-4 outside, but her best work was done on the defensive end where she collected seven steals.

Walk and Phiakhamngon's 3-pointers early in the third gave the Raiders their largest lead at 43-36, but it was back down to two a minute into the fourth. Up 49-47, Walk got to the line for a pair of free throws, took a pass inside from Phiakhamngon for an easy bucket, then watched Phiakhamngon complete the 6-0 spurt with a mid-range jumper.

Fryer put the Beacons away shortly thereafter, scoring in transition and knocking down back-to-back 3-pointers in the span of a couple minutes to make it 63-51 with 3:51 left.

Morgan McKinney and Aspen Slifka kept Bushnell in the game with 15 points apiece. McKinney, the reigning CCC Player of the Year, shot 7-of-15 and committed five turnovers. Aly Mirabile, the Beacons' point guard, had eight points and eight assists but was pressured into eight more turnovers.

SOU got more solid play from its reserves. Kalei Iwami had five points and four assists, Clara Robbins scored six points, Mia Wilmot went 2-for-2 and Danasia Allison picked up two steals.

The Raiders have won 12 in a row against Bushnell in Ashland.

The Beacons – who tabbed the CCC favorite in the coaches' preseason poll – have been awarded a forfeit victory for Saturday's game at Oregon Tech due to COVID-19 issues. SOU will host Corban at 3 p.m.
