ASHLAND – A late bounce – or, more accurately, the absence of one – finally went Southern Oregon's way in a 70-67 win against Eastern Oregon on Friday night at Lithia Motors Pavilion.
With the Raiders trailing by one in the final seconds,
Tez Allen took a contested fallaway jumper in the lane that missed the rim, but
Joe Juhala was there for a putback that dropped through with seven-tenths of a second left on the clock.
SOU added to its lead thanks to a technical foul, EOU threw away its ensuing inbounds pass to miss out on a potential shot for the tie, and the Raiders (4-6 overall) celebrated their first Cascade Conference win. They evened their record at 1-1 heading into Saturday's 5 p.m. contest against 15th-ranked College of Idaho.
Forward
Josh Meyer helped them get over the hump with a season-high 26 points on 8-of-16 shooting and six rebounds. He, Allen and Juhala accounted for 38 of SOU's 44 second-half points. Allen finished with 15 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals. Juhala tallied 15 points and seven boards.
The Raiders had led 66-58 with 2:35 to play after Meyer drained his fourth 3-pointer and chased it with a pair of free throws.
A 9-0 Mountaineers run flipped the lead. Phillip Malatare scored the last four, and his pull-up jumper put them up 67-66 but gave the ball back to the Raiders with 19 seconds left.
Malatare finished with 11 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Xavier Lovelace recorded 18 points and nine rebounds, shooting 3-of-6 from 3-point range. Ismael Valdez scored 15.
Neither offense was particularly sharp. The Mountaineers shot 40 percent. The Raiders shot 39 percent but made half of their attempts in the second half after going 8-of-28 in the first and trailing 29-26 at the break.
