ASHLAND – In addition to four wins, Southern Oregon's 2021 softball debut resulted in a sweep of Cascade Conference weekly accolades.

On Sunday, the No. 1-ranked Raiders were named the CCC Under Armour Team of the Week for their season-opening road sweeps of Simpson (Calif.) and William Jessup (Calif.). And on Monday, senior stars Gabby Sandoval and Hannah Shimek garnered Embrace Health-Santiam Hospital Player of the Week status.

Sandoval earned the pitching award and turned her first start of the year into the first no-hitter of her career in Friday's 12-0, five-inning defeat of Simpson. She finished off the doubleheader with her CCC-record 12th career save, a two-inning job, and 24 hours later took over sole possession of the No. 11 spot on the NAIA's career wins list with a four-hit complete game in a 4-1 win against WJU.

Sandoval struck out 18, walked five and allowed five hits and one earned run in 14 total innings on the weekend. She's won 16 consecutive decisions dating back to 2019 and, with a lifetime record of 92-17, is two wins away from moving into the top-10 in NAIA history.

Shimek got her senior campaign off to a fast start with four straight multi-hit efforts. The middle-infielder went 9-for-15 combined at the plate, hit a pair of doubles, and surpassed 70 career stolen bases with two on as many attempts. She accounted for six of the team's 26 runs scored.

On SOU's career lists Shimek stands at No. 2 in hits (185), RBIs (115) and runs scored (138), and is No. 3 in stolen bases (71).

SOU is slated to return to Redding, Calif., this Saturday and Sunday with more games against Simpson and WJU both days.
