SALEM – The Southern Oregon volleyball team rose to the occasion against No. 7-ranked Corban on Friday night but couldn't put the first blemish on the Warriors' record at the C.E. Jeffers Center.
The Raiders' fourth straight loss was easily their most encouraging performance of the skid and one of their best of the season: a 24-26, 25-17, 25-17, 16-25, 15-10 decision that marked Corban's 12th straight victory and only its second venture to a fifth set.
The Raiders (7-4, 2-4 Cascade Conference), even while winning back-to-back CCC titles in 2018 and '19, hadn't won a set in Salem since 2016. Entering the night, the Warriors (12-0, 6-0) had won 18 of their last 19 sets played.
SOU pushed them behind a season-high 16 kills from
Simone Gordon, who attacked at a .467 clip.
Hailey Van Well had 16 kills, too, on 37 swings, and
Shelby Young had 14 on 30.
The Raiders hit .281 as a team but ultimately couldn't stop Corban's .366 attack despite
Kadyn Jones' 18 digs and
Karina Oliveira's 14.
Rylee Troutman totaled 18 kills and Avari Ridgway had 17 for the Warriors. In the tiebreaker set, the duo combined for 10 on just 12 swings.
Van Well and Young set the tone for SOU with five kills apiece in the first set. The second and third were lopsided, but the Raiders controlled the fourth behind four from Gordon and a pair of
Savannah Schwindt service aces.
Corban never trailed the fifth set. Leading 12-9, Ridgway put down back-to-back attacks and Troutman eventually clinched the match with a final swing.
SOU's
Gwen Sheldon had 27 assists and
Hannah Randall had 24.
Hannah Stadstad added six kills and
Carol Melo five.
The Raiders will be back in action at 5 p.m. Saturday at Bushnell.
