SOU falls in 5 against C of I

ASHLAND – Southern Oregon's issues closing matches persisted at the hands of College of Idaho on Friday night at Lithia Motors Pavilion.

In a Cascade Conference battle, the Yotes came back for a 21-25, 25-23, 25-27, 25-23, 15-13 defeat of the Raiders to improve to 7-9 overall and even their CCC record at 4-4.

Emily Vandenberg had 12 kills and 10 digs and Brenna Hawkins was in on three of the Yotes' four blocks during the tiebreaker set, which they never trailed. After C of I jumped out to a 5-1 advantage, the Raiders (7-6, 2-6) finally evened the score at 12-12. Danielle Neuman's kill and an SOU attacking error put the momentum back on C of I's side.

Hailey Van Well extended the match with a kill, but her attacking into the net on the final point clinched it for the Yotes.

The loss spoiled big nights for SOU's Simone Gordon, who totaled 19 kills on 38 attempts and had four blocks, and defensive specialists Kadyn Jones (24 digs) and Karina Oliveira (20 digs), whose work helped offset a .185 attacking night.

Neuman and Jade Warren joined Vandenberg in double figures with 11 kills apiece for C of I. Sidney Frith had 29 assists and Sydnee Steel had 23 to head a .225 attack. Warren also posted a match-high eight blocks, helping the Yotes accumulate 12 as a team.

The Raiders got 16 kills from Van Well, 12 from Shelby Young, 11 from Sadie Byrd and 10 from Hannah Stadstad. That group, however, also combined for 29 attacking errors.

Taylor Russell contributed 37 assists and seven digs, and Hannah Randall had 28 assists and seven digs. Carol Melo assisted seven of SOU's 10 blocks.

During their six-match losing streak, the Raiders have lost three five-set decisions. They'll face another tough opponent at 7 p.m. Saturday in No. 14-ranked Eastern Oregon.
