KLAMATH FALLS – A last-minute venue change enabled the Southern Oregon men's soccer team to escape the unhealthy air just long enough to pick up its third straight win Friday, 2-1 over William Jessup (Calif.) at the Oregon Tech Soccer Field.
Twenty-four hours after finishing off a comfy 3-0 victory against Simpson, the Raiders (3-0) had to scrap to finish off the Warriors (0-2) in a testy matchup, and had to ditch Raider Stadium to find a window to do it. They got the job done with goals from
Alan Gaytan and
Evan Norconk.
Gaytan scored for the second day in a row in the 39th minute, giving the Raiders the first goal when
Joao de Santos caught the Warriors off guard on a free kick from the top of the box. De Santos slid his pass to the right and Gaytan streaked in with the ball for an eight-yard shot inside the left post.
SOU made it 2-0 less than a minute into the second half.
Moises Hernandez cut through WJU's press to get the ball out of the backfield and found Gaytan, who was credited with the assist after making a run down the left side and crossing to Norconk at the opposite post for a header.
Norconk's goal was his first-ever as a Raider. Gaytan's was his 11th.
The Warriors got back within a goal in the 59th minute when Angelo Chavez was tripped up in the box on a breakaway, drawing a yellow card and a penalty kick. Marcus Tovar converted it.
SOU just missed on a couple chances to extend the lead again. In the 74th minute, de Santos' lined shot from the top of the box hit the post. Two minutes later,
Junior Rivas peppered the right post.
The Raiders out-shot WJU 15-9 on the afternoon.
They'll be off until Sept. 11, when they conclude their non-conference schedule at Menlo (Calif.). After that, they'll open Cascade Conference play in Ashland on Sept. 17 against Evergreen (Wash.).
