ASHLAND –
Dominique Harding and
Kami Walk put the Southern Oregon women's basketball team on their backs against Northwest (Wash.) to keep the Raiders' home record unblemished Friday night in a Cascade Conference battle.
SOU escaped with a 60-58 victory after trailing by nine points midway through the third quarter, improving to 18-4 overall, 11-3 in the Cascade Conference and 10-0 at Lithia Motors Pavilion.
Harding, a senior guard, hit all six of her field-goal attempts after halftime to finish with 15 points. Walk – a sophomore forward who sat out both of SOU's losses last weekend due to injury – put up another monster line with 21 points, eight rebounds, four blocks, four assists and three steals in her return. She also delivered the two biggest plays of crunch time, helping the Raiders move within a half-game of first-place Eastern Oregon.
With 29 seconds to go,
Brianna Phiakhamngon found Walk inside for the go-ahead basket, putting the Raiders up 59-58. Walk then picked off the Eagles' ensuing inbounds pass, forcing them to foul.
Mia Wilmot made one of two free throws, and with three seconds left Livi Lindsey's attempt to tie from the top of the key missed everything.
Phiakhamngon totaled 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting and helped the Raiders stay within striking distance in the first half as they mustered just 18 points on 26-percent shooting. They trailed by six at the break, but the Eagles had pushed their advantage to 38-29 with 3:31 left in the third before SOU made its move.
A 19-4 Raider run – in which Harding and Walk combined for 14 points – commenced. The lead changed hands three more times in the final minutes before Walk put the Eagles away.
The performance was her fifth with 20-plus points. She got their by shooting 11-of-12 at the free-throw line, raising her percentage at the stripe to 89 percent on the season (117-of-131).
Harding finished with 15 points.
Danasia Allison added six and two steals.
Lindsey starred for the Eagles with 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting, seven steals and seven rebounds. Sam VanLoo registered a double-double with 12 and 12.
The Raiders manufactured the win despite hitting one 3-pointer, their lowest mark of 2021-22.
Heading into Saturday's 3 p.m. matchup against Evergreen (Wash.), they're tied in the loss column with EOU and LC State. The Mountaineers – who lost at home Friday to Bushnell – lead by one game in the win column.
