SOU tops Geoducks to take over 3rd place

ASHLAND – The Southern Oregon volleyball team moved back into third place in the Cascade Conference with another quality win, 25-19, 20-25, 26-24, 25-18 against Evergreen (Wash.) on Saturday night at Lithia Motors Pavilion.

Hannah Randall established a new career-high for the second night in a row with 50 assists, adding eight digs and four kills while directing the attack. Sadie Byrd converted 12 kills on 21 swings while Carol Melo had nine on 17, and the middles were both in on team-highs of five blocks.

The Raiders moved to a season-best 10 wins over .500 at 16-6 overall. They improved to 10-5 in the CCC.

Evergreen (11-9, 10-6), which swept Oregon Tech on Friday to briefly take over third place, got 38 kills from the trio of Zoe Shaw (17), Taylor Suka (11) and Lily Stewart (10), but they also combined for 20 attacking errors. The Geoducks collectively hit .140.

SOU hit .201, shrugging off Evergreen's 14 blocks, and only had two reception errors – 13 fewer than in Friday's five-set win against Northwest.

Hailey Van Well supplied a team-high 16 kills on 49 attempts, reaching double figures for the 11th time in 12 matches. She came through in the critical third set that featured 17 ties, dragging the Raiders out of a 24-23 hole with three consecutive kills to steal it. Vroman also had two late kills to even the score.

Kayla Neidigh (20 digs) and Trinity Atuatasi (11) bailed the Raiders out on the back row. In the fourth set, Byrd teamed up with Van Well and Simone Gordon for blocks to close the match.

The Raiders swept the series with the Geoducks. At 6 p.m. Tuesday, they'll be in Klamath Falls seeking a season split with Oregon Tech.
