ASHLAND – The regular-season finale between Southern Oregon and No. 19 Warner Pacific had a little bit of everything before ending in a 2-2 tie on Saturday afternoon at Raider Stadium.
SOU's
Tybalt Thornberry equalized the match with a successful penalty kick in the 88th minute, giving the Raiders (12-5-1 overall, 9-3-1 Cascade Conference) another point against a ranked squad a week after upsetting then-No. 23 Corban.
Both teams were playing a man down at that point on a day with no shortage of dramatics. The Knights (16-0-2, 11-0-2) – who clinched the CCC regular-season title with a draw on Friday at Oregon Tech – got another goal from star freshman Andrew Martinez, his NAIA-leading 28th of the season, in the first half, and he assisted their go-ahead goal in the 87th minute by setting up Juan Gudino's chip shot an instant after SOU was whistled for a foul.
Their celebration didn't last long. With 2 minutes 2 seconds remaining,
Gopala Sauer got tripped up in the box, giving Thornberry the shot to tie.
Thornberry also assisted the first score of the game, an improbable finish by
Evan Norconk with his back to the goal that rolled just inside the right post in the 23rd minute.
The Raiders did well to keep it close from there. They were down to 10 men after
Kevin Nevinger got sent off with his second yellow card in the 37th minute. They had to survive until the 61st minute when WPU lost Hunter Leach to a red card for making contact with SOU keeper
Anthony Armenta.
Armenta was another hero of the match. He made six saves on his senior day – including a stop of Erik Mattice's penalty kick with the score 1-1 in the 69th minute.
The Raiders sit at fourth in the standings, and will land anywhere between the Nos. 3 and 5 seeds pending the outcomes of Saturday's late matches for third-place Corban (9-2-1 CCC) and fifth-place College of Idaho (9-3 CCC).
They're unbeaten in 10 of their last 11 games ahead of the CCC Tournament quarterfinals on Nov. 7 in Springfield.
