HELENA, Mont. – As the wins begin to pile up again, there has been no shortage of drama for the Southern Oregon University men's soccer team in recent weeks.
Adrian Villegas supplied the theatrics on Friday, netting the lone goal in the 81st minute as the Raiders prevailed for a 1-0 Cascade Conference victory over Carroll (Mont.) at Nelson Stadium.
Charley-Bolyard triggered the pretty sequence with the clock winding down on a scoreless afternoon. He sent a pass from the left sideline on a rope to
Alan Gaytan atop the box, and Gaytan directed it on his first touch to Villegas cutting in front of him. Keeper Mathias Graveson made a diving stop of Villegas' initial attempt, but he was left on the ground as Villegas followed the ball in and drove it and a Saints defender into the goal.
The Raiders (7-4 overall, 4-2 CCC) have scored the game-winners in each of their last two outings with fewer than 10 minutes remaining. They've won four in a row, a streak that started when they battled back from a two-goal deficit at Oregon Tech.
The run of play was in their favor for most of the match. Keeper
Anthony Armenta needed to make just one save, while SOU put eight shots on goal against Graveson.
Villegas' goal was his third of the season – two of which have been game-winners – and the 17th of his career. The junior put three of his five shots on target.
The Saints dipped to 4-5-1 overall and 3-4 in the CCC.
SOU is sitting in fourth place on the conference table but just three points out of second. The team will travel Sunday to last-place Walla Walla (Wash.) for a 1 p.m. matchup.
