LA GRANDE – Southern Oregon is through to the Cascade Conference semifinals after a critical come-from-behind win Friday morning at Quinn Coliseum, which not only kept the Raiders alive at the tournament but also likely made them a shoo-in for next week's national playoff field.
Playing as the No. 3 seed at the CCC Championships presented by U.S. Bank, the Raiders (21-9 overall) were unfazed by a marathon third-set loss that put them on the ropes against No. 6 seed Lewis-Clark State (Idaho). They recovered to capture a 19-25, 25-18, 27-29, 25-15, 15-11 decision, setting up a 4 p.m. semifinal match against No. 2 seed and fourth-ranked Corban.
All-conference outside hitter
Hailey Van Well came through with 14 kills, her highest total in seven outings, and matched a season-high with four assisted blocks.
Katie Vroman had a career-high 12 kills,
Simone Gordon put away 11 kills on a .435 average, and
Carol Melo added 10 kills and six blocks.
After falling behind 5-4 in the tiebreaker set, the Raiders took control with a 7-1 run pieced together with three unforced Warriors errors, two Gordon kills, a Vroman kill, and
Taylor Jackson's fourth and fnial service ace.
The Raiders failed to take advantage of two set points in the third, but stormed ahead 19-7 in the fourth. They rattled LCSC with seven blocks in the frame, and all-conference middle
Sadie Byrd was in on the first five of them.
Junior setter
Hannah Randall ran the show with 43 assists, 13 digs and five blocks of her own.
Karina Oliveira contributed 12 digs.
The Warriors wrapped up with a 16-12 record. They'd split the season series with SOU, winning the most recent meeting in four sets at home.
The winner of the Raiders' match against Corban will advance to Saturday's 3 p.m. final. Corban swept the regular-season series.
