ROCKLIN, Calif. –
Josh Meyer recorded a double-double and
Matt Zosel banked a win in his debut as Southern Oregon's head coach, a 73-63 decision against Menlo (Calif.) at William Jessup's Warrior Arena on Friday afternoon.
Meyer, a two-time all-conference senior forward, shot 7-of-12 from the field to total 18 points and 12 rebounds, leading four Raiders in double figures. As a team, they neutralized a 5-of-23 day from 3-point range by shooting 64 percent inside the arc and committing just 10 turnovers – six fewer than the Oaks.
SOU outscored Menlo 40-29 in the second half, taking hold of the lead three minutes into the period and holding onto it for good. Up 63-59 with 3:48 to go, Meyer hit his second 3-pointer, then found
Dominic McGarvey for a layup on the Raiders' next possession after the Oaks responded.
McGarvey, a 6-foot-9 junior transfer, finished with 12 points and five rebounds in his first game as a Raider. Senior guard
Tez Allen had 12 points, four rebounds, three steals and three assists, and
Atmar Mundu scored 10.
Cole McAninch, another player making his SOU debut, shot 4-of-5 off the bench.
The Oaks, who'd won their first two games of the season, shot just 39 percent. They matched SOU's struggles from deep, where they went 4-of-20. Kaito Williams scored a team-high 14 points.
Zosel became the first head coach to win his opening game at SOU since Mark Winans in 1983.
The Raiders will play again at the Bill Holtz Warrior Classic on Saturday, tipping off against host and No. 6-ranked William Jessup at 6:30 p.m.
