KLAMATH FALLS – After a slow start, the Southern Oregon women's basketball team put the clamps on George Fox to open the Lithia-Oregon Tech Classic with a 72-47 win on Friday afternoon at Danny Miles Court.
Kami Walk and
Brianna Phiakhamngon scored 14 points apiece,
Kalei Iwami contributed 12, and
Emma Schmerbach and
Makayla Scurlock combined to shoot 10-of-12 off the bench for the Raiders, who improved to 2-0.
They trailed 17-12 after the first quarter, but held the Bruins to 37-percent shooting the rest of the way and sent them to the free-throw line just three times all afternoon. SOU also had nine fewer turnovers (19-10) and three more offensive rebounds (11-8), generating 12 extra possessions.
The Raiders were up 33-25 by halftime and expanded the lead to 21 in the third quarter. The matchup was their first against GFU, an NCAA Division III affiliate, since 2010.
Walk added four steals and four rebounds to her total. Phiakhamngon and Iwami worked efficiently, and both hit two 3-pointers. Scurlock scored 11 and Schmerbach had 10 for a bench unit that combined to shoot 54 percent.
SOU plays in Klamath again at 3:30 p.m. Saturday against Menlo (Calif.), tipping off at 3:30 p.m.
