PORTLAND – With a straight-set victory against Multnomah in the regular-season finale, the Southern Oregon volleyball team locked up the Cascade Conference's No. 3 seed and its third 20-win season in four years on Saturday at Skagen Court.
Sadie Byrd went for nine blocks and eight kills and
Simone Gordon had 10 kills compared to one attacking error in the 25-19, 25-11, 28-26 decision. Outside of fighting off set point three times in the final frame, the Raiders were unchallenged in their 11th consecutive sweep of the Lions.
They improved to 20-9 overall and wrapped conference play at 14-8. They'll start the six-team CCC Tournament – hosted by regular-season champion Eastern Oregon in La Grande – against No. 6 seed Lewis-Clark State (Idaho) at 9 a.m. Friday. The winner will play a semifinal match at 4 p.m. Friday against No. 2 seed and third-ranked Corban, and the championship is set for 3 p.m. Saturday.
The Raiders won their first matchup against LCSC in three sets on Sept. 3 in Ashland. They lost the next 3-1 in Lewiston on Oct. 7.
SOU stymied the Lions to the tune of a negative attacking average with 24 kills and 25 attacking errors. They won the battle at the net with 12 blocks, five of which were assisted by
Savannah Schwindt. She also contributed six kills.
Taylor Russell posted team-highs of 17 assists and three service aces.
Karina Oliveira had 13 digs and
Trinity Atuatasi had 11.
The Raiders have gotten 13 of their 20 wins via sweeps.
